Last Week’s Program

Dr. Don Poe from Pfeiffer presented a program about the Salem Witch trials.  This happened in 1692 and 20 (or 21) accused witches were hung.  From the first accusations through the hangings the event last 9 months.  It started in January at Rev. Paris resident, by his daughter, niece and their slave Titcheba.  It started with “fortune telling”, and then the girls started getting rashes and having fits.  The townspeople decided it must be witchcraft.  Other girls in town started having fits, about 12 to 15.  The young girls then started getting notoriety and it was fun at first.  Then they started naming too many people, including the then governor’s wife. The girls also started naming men.

In June all the trials started, all the accused were put into jail.  To get out of jail you had to do to things.  First, admit that you were a witch and then name names.  The remainder of you life you were known as a witch.

Charles Corey could not technically be counted as a witch.  He refused to plea, so they could not go to trial.  So they put him on the ground.  And started putting rocks and stones on him, he still would not plea.  He died without every giving a plea.  Many believed he did not give a plea, then the government could not take his property and it would go to his children.  The government would take your property if you were an accused witch.

It is believed that all this happened due to the dislike between Salem Town and Salem Village.  People in Salem village paid taxes to Salem Town, they were not supposed to have a church but Rev. Paris started his own church but Salem Town made it very difficult.  So most of the accused witches were located in Salem Town and the accusers were located in Salem Village.

A good book to read is Salem Possessed.

Last Week’s Program

Paul Tran escaped Vietnam in 1981, he lived in a refugee camp for 6 months.  He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina.  He started working for Alcoa in 1990.  He was born in Vietnam in 1966; his father was a soldier in the Vietnam War.  He shared how difficult it was to grow up in a war torn country.  When the US withdrew, the S. Vietnam was starting to be independent.  Then the N. Vietnamese came back into the country.  Paul’s father was a soldier and was told to protect the country at all cost.   Paul was only 9 years old, and didn’t know if he would ever see his father again.  But his father came home in the middle of the night and told his family they needed to try and get to Saigon.  All residents, soldiers and their families left the community.  The communist found out about the escape plan and started attacking the convoy.  This was a disaster.  Luckily Paul’s family escaped and made it to Saigon.  They had spent all their money and valuables to get to Saigon, they stayed with their grandparents.  The S. Vietnam government gave up the fight.  Paul’s family started over again.  But since the communist had taken over they had no human rights, you were not permitted to worship freely, and since Paul’s father had served on the S. Vietnamese army they were treated terribly.  You were not judged as an individual but on if you believed in communism.  In 1981 Paul’s father decided they needed to escape; only Paul and his father would attempt the escape.  Finally after many difficulties they made it to freedom.  Many years later the remaining family members made it to the United States.   Paul thanked all the US Soldiers who served in the War.
